Dog and Cat Rescue is at the heart of the Santisook Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation mission.
We welcome you to our website. Here you will find information on the work we do; running two shelters, assisting local people in need with help for their pets, sterilizing and vaccinating stray animals, and rescuing those off the streets who are sick or injured. We are always looking for new supporters, and people who would like to volunteer.
We are a small group of Thai people who are dedicated to making Chiang Mai a better place for animals and people. Most of the 400 animals in our shelters have all been rescued from injuries and illness caused by hard lives on the streets.
Unwanted pets, and their babies, are left on the street when the owner no longer wants them. Puppies and kittens are born on the streets, with no vaccinations or someone to care for them. They die of terrible diseases, are hit by cars, and are killed by local people who do not want them around. Santisook Dog and Cat Rescue gives the sick and injured a second chance. We provide veterinary care, good food, and a safe place to recover. Those who are healthy and friendly find new loving homes.
By working not only on dog and cat rescue, but also on the sterilization and vaccination of stray dog populations, we are providing a service to the local community. Rabies is a deadly disease that kills at least 10 people per year in Thailand, while over 400,000 are treated for post exposure for the disease, most due to dog bites. By sterilizing and vaccinating stray dogs, we are protecting people in our local community. Many dog bites happen when unaltered male dogs are roaming the streets, or when pregnant or nursing moms are protecting their puppies.

Helping stray dogs and cats is what Buddhists see as something that should be done to help these animals survive. But helping by feeding alone does not solve the problem of reducing the number of stray dogs and cats.
These dogs and cats are strong and able to produce more population rapidly and continuously — an endless problem. There are many puppies and kittens that have been dumped in the market and the streets; without any help they will be left to die.
The solution to the number of stray dogs and cats that you can help with is sterilization of male and female dogs and cats.

- Prevents male dogs from being injured in fights, or hurt and killed in road accidents while roaming for mates
- Our first goal is to sterilize female and male cats to reduce the stray cat population, together with vaccination and deworming
- Providing medical treatment and recovery care for cats injured in accidents or by abuse
- Finding homes for kittens and adult cats. Many cats are abandoned at temples, especially when pregnant. Owners should take responsibility and sterilize their cats to prevent pregnancy
- Providing medical care and bringing food to cats living at temples
- Sterilizing female and male dogs living at our shelters, and as many stray dogs as possible, to reduce the stray dog population — many people still do not see the problem of leaving dogs unsterilized, letting them give birth to many puppies every year
- Providing medical care for dogs suffering from mange, dogs that have been abused, and dogs injured in road accidents. Some recover fully, while others become disabled and need lifelong care
- Helping abandoned puppies — caring for them and finding them new homes. Abandonment increases every year because owners neglect to sterilize their female dogs. We work with provincial public health offices to educate local people about the importance of sterilization
- Bringing food to dogs living at temples and supporting food donations, to ease the burden on monks who care for many dogs, so the dogs have enough to eat
- Fundraising through advertising in various media and running stalls at events, distributing leaflets, placing donation boxes, and selling goods for donations at Wua Lai Walking Street
